Barkow Leibinger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barkow Leibinger is a German-American architecture firm based in Berlin .

history

The office was founded in 1993 by Frank Barkow and Regine Leibinger . Barkow Leibinger's work includes construction practice, experimental materials research and teaching at national and international universities. This is how projects are created “at the interface between artistic spatial design and functional architecture”. In the book “Spielraum”, the American art historian Hal Foster Barkow characterizes Leibinger as architects who are just as much “bricolore” as engineers.

The founders

Frank Barkow (* 1957) studied at Montana State University and Harvard University . He has taught at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, Cornell University , Harvard University, the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart and EPFL Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne .

Regine Leibinger (* 1963) studied in Berlin and at Harvard University and taught at the Architectural Association in London and at Harvard University , among others . From 2006 to 2017 she was Professor of Building Construction and Design at the TU Berlin .

Barkow and Leibinger currently teach at Princeton University in the United States.

architecture

Barkow Leibinger gained extensive experience in the field of industrial construction. For medium-sized and large companies in Germany and abroad, they developed numerous master plans for site development and built buildings for production, logistics and administration. The Trumpf company campus in Ditzingen received the “industrial building award” in 2016 as the best urban development facility. Other projects such as the “Tour Total” in Berlin, the HAWE factory in Kaufbeuren or the Trumpf company restaurant in Ditzingen have won awards.

Building in Berlin

For many years Barkow Leibinger realized projects all over the world, but in Berlin itself only two smaller projects on the outskirts. In the meantime, the office has "arrived in the Berlin context", as the "bauwelt" 2016 determined. Most recently, the office buildings "Monnet 4" and "Bertha Berlin" were built in Europacity near Berlin Central Station, the creative center "Aufbau Haus 84" on Moritzplatz in Kreuzberg and the "Fellows Pavilion" for the American Academy in Berlin on Wannsee. At the end of 2017, the Berlin district of Neukölln gave the green light for the construction of the “Estrel Tower” , which at 175 meters will be Berlin's tallest skyscraper and at the same time Germany's tallest hotel building. The planning for the 300 meter long office building "B: HUB" on the Rummelsburger Bucht has been going on since January 2018. In 2018 the reception of the "Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz" was converted.

Experimental materials research

In addition to their building projects, Barkow Leibinger are known for their experimental and temporary installations. In the "area of tension between conceptual design idea and practical implementation", these studies are created in the context of exhibitions, competition entries or specific building projects. Examples of this are the installation “Loom Hyperbolic” in Marrakech, the “Kinetic Wall” at the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale and the “Serpentine Summer House” near the Serpentine Gallery in London's Kensington Gardens.
