description

Barns House is on the right bank of the Tweed, about three kilometers west of Peebles. The villa was built between 1773 and 1780 for James Burnet of Barns on the site of a previous building. Michael Naesmyth provided the design in Georgian style . The facades of the symmetrically constructed, two-story building are plastered with Harl . Corner stones and bezels made of natural stone are contrasted in color . Four Ionic columns flank the central entrance area on the south-facing front. The facade closes with a triangular gable . A hipped roof sits on. The flat wing extending to the left is more recent.

stables

The stables are located around 150 meters southwest of the main building. They were created during the construction of Barns House. The masonry of the symmetrically constructed complex consists of rubble stone . Details made of red sandstone are set off . The doorway set up in the middle on the northwest side with a seated octagonal tower is striking . Its tent roof ends in a lead dome that closes with a weather vane . Pavilions flank the area. The inner courtyard is enclosed on all sides.
