Baroque pop , rarely baroque rock , is a style of music that developed on the west coast of the United States and Great Britain in the mid-1960s . The genre describes a fusion of rock or pop music with elements of classical music , especially baroque music .

definition

The genres can be brought together on the one hand in the form of reference to traditional art music , such as A Whiter Shade of Pale (1967) by the British band Procol Harum , which is strongly based on the composition Air from Suite No. 3 in D major by Johann Sebastian Bach is oriented. For the most part, the music of Baroque Pop is based on classical composition theory ( counterpoint and harmony ). On the other hand, the fusion genre can include an expansion of the range of instruments: In addition to the typical instruments of popular music such as guitar or drums , Baroque Pop is characterized by orchestral arrangements with string , wind and plucked instruments . A well-known example is the Beach Boys song God Only Knows (1966) , which also features French horn , violins , double bass and clarinet .

The term “baroque pop” only emerged after the genre's heyday and caught on in the 1990s. At that time there was a stylistic successor with Chamber Pop, a combination of pop with chamber music . The music journalist Lillian Roxon used the term “Baroque Rock” to refer to baroque style quotations in rock music as early as 1969. The term “Classical Rock” is rarely used synonymously, not to be confused with Classic Rock . The synthesis of rock and classic can also be found in progressive rock and symphonic rock , for example in the Electric Light Orchestra or The Nice .
