Barqueiros is a place and a municipality in northern Portugal . It is located on the Rio Douro and belongs to the Alto Douro wine-growing region , the first protected wine-growing region in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 .

history
The place received its first city rights on September 13, 1123 by Queen D. Teresa , before the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal (1139). The town charter was confirmed and renewed in 1223, 1441 and 1513.
In the course of the administrative reforms after the Miguelistenkrieg , the district of Barqueiros was dissolved in 1836 and has been a municipality of the Mesão Frio district ever since.

Barqueiros is on the Linha do Douro railway line . The small train station is a listed building, but today only serves as a stopping point.
The municipality of Barqueiros is connected via the secondary national road N 108. The next motorway junction is junction 11 of the A24 in Peso da Régua, about 15 km away .
Personalities
The Portuguese writer Domingos Monteiro (1903–1980) was born in Barqueiros.
