Barra do Ribeiro is a city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil on the Rio Guaíba . It is located about 50 km southwest of Porto Alegre . The towns of Guaíba , Mariana Pimentel , Sertão Santana , Sentinela do Sul and Tapes are neighboring . Originally, Barra do Ribeiro was part of the Guaíba and Tapes municipalities.

history

The history of the whites in the area of ​​Barra do Ribeiro, named after the sandbar ( Barra ) at the confluence of the Ribeiro river into the Rio Guaíba, began around 1780 with the charqueada (manufacture of dried meat) by Antônio Alves Guimarães. Around 1800 the place Barra do Ribeiro arose with immigrants from the Azores . Poles, Germans and Italians began to move in from 1874.

economy

The origin lies in the breeding of cattle and the processing of the products. Most important today is tourism with Gaúcho traditions and water sports on the banks of the Rio Guaíba and the Lagoa dos Patos .
