Barry Brook (2011)

Barry William Brook (born February 28, 1974 in Melbourne , Australia ) is an Australian environmental scientist .

Career

Brook graduated from Macquarie University in Sydney . There he obtained a B.Sc. (Hons I) in Conservation Biology, Ecology and Evolution (conservation biology, ecology and evolution) . In 1999 he was awarded a Ph.D. with a thesis in the field of nature conservation (title: Evaluating population viability analysis ). PhD . He then worked for a long time at the Key Center for Tropical Wildlife Management in Darwin . A 2000 publication by Brook (et al.) In Nature reviewed and confirmed the population viability analysis model .

At the University of Adelaide , Brook holds the Climate Change Chair, named after Sir Hubert Wilkins , and is Director of the Environment Institute . He is also a member of the Science and Research Council (German: Wissenschaftsrat ) advisor to the government of the state of South Australia .

In the non-governmental and non-profit self-reported Science Council for Global Initiatives (German: Science Council for Global Initiatives ), which some prominent nuclear experts as Evgeny Velikhov and Baldev Raj along with prominent climate activists like James Hansen provides for speeches and events, Brook is a member .

Brook is an avowed advocate of nuclear energy and counts it, especially when using 4th generation reactors such as the sodium-cooled Integral Fast Reactor (a newer type of breeder reactor ), among the sustainable and long-term usable energy sources. Among other things, he defended this thesis in an interview with the FAZ himself in connection with the nuclear disaster in Fukushima in the wake of the Tōhoku earthquake in Japan in 2011.

As an environmental biologist and climate specialist, Brook speaks out in favor of a reactor type that, although intensively researched, is viewed critically by a number of opponents and specialists due to the risk of sodium being released from the cooling circuit . Brook refers to the risks that exist with other energy sources and global warming in general.

Brook is known to the wider public as a blogger and his internet platform is called BraveNewClimate .

Personal

Brook is married to a Japanese woman and has two sons.
