Amy Sue Barston

Amy Sue Barston (* in Evanston / Illinois ) is an American cellist .

Barston had his first cello lessons at the age of three with Nell Novak at the Music Institute of Chicago and later studied at the University of Southern California with Eleonore Schoenfeld and at the Juilliard School with Joel Krosnick . She also took part in masterclasses from Yo Yo Ma , Bernard Greenhouse , David Geringas , Ralph Kirshbaum and Miriam Fried and attended summer courses from Irene Sharp , Richard Aaron , Phillipe Mueller , Gary Hoffman and Tim Eddy . She received her training in chamber music from Robert Mann , Peter Oundjian , Roland Vamos , Leon Fleisher and Pinchas Zukerman .

As a soloist she has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , the Chicago Chamber Orchestra , the Prometheus Chamber Orchestra , the Rockford Symphony , the USC Symphony , the Westchester Symphony and the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra . In the field of chamber music she worked with Leon Fleisher , Jon Kimura Parker , Arnold Steinhardt , Bernard Greenhouse , Ani Kavafian and Mark O'Connor , among others . She has performed at Carnegie Hall , Alice Tully Hall , Haan Hall in Jerusalem, the Banff Center in Canada, the International Musicians' Seminar in England, the Power House in Australia and Chicago's Symphony Center . At the Ravinia Festival she premiered Ned Rorem's Aftermath .

From 2005 Barston taught at the National Cello Institute and the Japan-Seattle Advanced Institute for Cello , and since 2014 she has been a teacher at the pre-college of the Juilliard School. She is also artistic director of the Canandaigua Lake Music Festival in New York and a member of the Trio Vela (with violinist Lisa Lee and pianist Olga Vinokur ) and the Corigliano Quartet (with Elisa Barston and Michael Jinsoo Lim , violin and Melia Watras , viola) . She won the Grand Prize at the Society of American Musicians' Competition and the Audience Prize and First Prize at the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition .
