Bart Defoort (born February 10, 1964 in Brussels ) is a Belgian saxophonist ( tenor and soprano saxophone ) of modern jazz and new improvisation music .

Live and act

Defoort comes from a musical family (his brother is the composer Kris Defoort ). In the 1980s he studied with Steve Houben at the conservatory in his hometown ; he also attended master classes with John Ruocco , Joe Lovano and Dave Holland . During this time he accompanied theater performances, was active in the Blindman Sax Quartet and in the Fred Van Hoves WIM Orchestra . Then he founded the group Octurn together with Bo Van Der Werf and played in his brother's basement party . He has been a member of the Brussels Jazz Orchestra since 1993 , where he was involved in projects and albums with Toots Thielemans , David Liebman , Philip Catherine , Michel Herr , Bert Joris , Tom Harrell , Kenny Werner and Norma Winstone . Between 1996 and 1998 he had his own quartet and then led the group Streams with Diederik Wissels until 2001 , which also performed in France. Since then he has presented his own formations again, but has also performed with the Italian saxophonist Emanuele Oisi. He also worked with Belgian musicians such as Chris Joris , Olivier Collette , Marnix Bustra and Carlo Morena as well as with Tutu Puoane ( Mama Africa ).
