Oldest Appenzell map in the Appenzeller Chronicle by Bartholomäus Bischofberger, 1682

Bartholomäus Bischofberger was a son of Barbel and Andreas Bischofberger-Sonderegger. In 1644 he married his first wife, Elsbeth Hörler, von Gais , widow of Captain Bartholomäus Keller. In 1665 he married his second wife, Maria Magdalena Gerber, from St. Gallen , widow of the pharmacist Andreas Schopfer and Bartholomäus Huber. In 1678 he married his third wife, Regula Elmer von Herisau . His fourth wife, Magdalena Scheuss von Herisau, married Bartholomäus Bischofberger in 1693.

Bartholomäus Bischofberger was orphaned as early as 1629; both parents died of the plague. Thanks to scholarships, he was able to study theology in Zurich . In 1643 he was elected pastor in Trogen . From 1654 he was dean of Appenzell Ausserrhoden.

His Appenzeller Chronic (standard title: Appenzeller Chronik ), published in 1682, is often imprecise; the factual-chronological classification leads to repetitions. Nevertheless, it is a deserving first attempt to portray the history, country and people of the state of Appenzell. This chronicle also contains the first printed map of the state of Appenzell and a topographical description of its homeland.

Bartholomäus Bischofberger kept a diary containing his autobiography until his death , and he published a handful of other writings, not all of which have survived. The Appenzellisches monthly newspaper says about his portrait : “His portrait, painted in oil, is in the parish house in Trogen and proves that he was an exceptionally handsome man, whose high forehead and open, lively eye immediately betrayed an excellent man. »
