Bartolomeo Cesi (painter)
Bartolomeo Cesi (also Bartolomeo Ceci ; born August 16, 1556 in Bologna ; † August 15, 1629 ibid) was an Italian painter of the Bolognese school .
Life
Bartolomeo Cesi came from a wealthy family of the Bolognese bourgeoisie. He received his artistic training as a youth from Giovanni Francesco Bezzi , known as il Nosadella . Bartolomeo Cesi developed his personal style based on Mannerism , as can be seen from his work in the Vezza Chapel of the Basilica Santo Stefano in Bologna (1574) and his mythological references in the design of the Palazzo Boschi. In 1583 he was accepted as a master in the Bolognese painters' guild.
In a later phase of his artistic work, Bartolomeo Cesi adapted himself to the Florentine style prevailing at the time, being influenced by the Counter Reformation as well as by the book of Cardinal Gabriele Paleotti Discorso intorno alle immagini sacre e profane (1582). This endeavor to combine naturalistic elements with the representation of Christian elements of faith is evident in the image of Saint Benedict in the Church of San Procolo in Bologna
In 1591 he went on a trip to Rome, where he had already made contacts through Scipione Pulzone . During this stay, he expanded his skills as a painter in terms of color and representation with elements from the formal language of religious painting.
In 1595 Cesi finished the triptych Adorazione dei Magi ("Adoration of the Three Magi") in the Basilica of San Domenico in Bologna and a representation of the Virgin with saints . One of his last works was the painting of the choir and the crypt in the cathedral of Bologna in collaboration with Prospero Fontana . He also worked with Ludovico Carracci .
