The Bartolomeu Dias is a hopper excavator built by the Uljanik Brodogradilište shipyard for the Jan de Nul Group .

Technical specifications

The Bartolomeu Dias was delivered in 2013 by the Uljanik Brodogradiliste shipyard in Croatia for the Belgian hydraulic engineering company Jan de Nul Group . The suction excavator has a length of 147.80 m, a width of 30.0 m and is measured at 17,130 GT. With a draft of 11.2 m, she has a deadweight capacity of around 26,600 tons. Diesel engines with a total of 15,960 kW were installed on the ship . The ship of two driven MAN - diesel engines each with 7,200 kW of power. It thus reaches the nominal speed of 16 knots.

The dredging pumps have a total drive power of 4,000 kW. Extinguishing pumps with a drive power of 8,000 kW are available to flush the cargo ashore. The maximum suction depth is 52 meters. The suction pipe has a diameter of 1.3 m.

On board the Bartolomeu Dias , named after the Portuguese navigator and explorer , there are accommodations for a total of 33 people.

There are three options for unloading:

  • Unloading by opening the bottom flaps,
  • Unloading via a pressure pipe that is connected to the front of the ship,
  • direct flushing with the water cannon on the bow of the ship.

Sister ship of the Bartolomeus Dias is the Pedro Álvares Cabral, built under hull number 496 and delivered in October 2012 . Here, too, the namesake was a Portuguese navigator and explorer .
