The settlement is located around seven kilometers east of Hultsfred in the municipality of the same name on Lake Nerbjärken . The H699 road runs from Hultsfred to Basebo. Basebo has four permanently inhabited houses (as of 2016), so the settlement is not administratively recorded as a place (place of crime ). There is another house that can be rented by tourists. On the lake Nerbjärken a track is cleared for ice skating in winter.

Name and story

Basebo was formerly called Baßebode (1546), Baßebodha (1577), Baßegerde (1598), Baßeboo (1680), Basebo (1714) and Bassebo (1880). It has been known as Basebo since 1945. The name "Basebo" probably comes from the old Swedish first name Bassi. A boar or a big man was called a Basse.

People probably lived in Basebo as early as the Iron Age, at least some remains from this time have been found that can now be viewed in the Vena Museum of Local History. Modern settlement dates back to the 16th or 17th century.

On the property Basebo 1: 6 a school was built in 1910, which replaced the school in Sönnerhult, which had become too small. Up to 50 children attended school in Basebo at times. After the number of pupils had dropped to just 10 in the 1955/56 school year, the school was closed. Today the school building is privately owned and used as an apartment.
