The Basilica of St. Peter and Paul is a Roman Catholic church in Poland Strzegom ( German  Striegau ) and belongs to the Diocese of Swidnica . The church bears the title of a minor basilica and is listed as a Polish cultural monument .

history

After a previous building from the 13th century, the Sovereign Order of Malta erected the Gothic church building as part of its missionary work from the beginning of the 14th century , a large church made of brick with broken granite, basalt and sandstone as a cladding for decorative elements. Both the dukes of Schweidnitz-Jauer and the residents of Strzegom (Striegau) contributed to the financing of the church. The work was not completed until the beginning of the 16th century, the parish was founded in the 16th century. It is the city's most valuable cultural heritage and one of the largest churches in Lower Silesia . The nave has a length of 76 meters with a height and width of 26 meters each. The church is furnished with handicrafts mainly from the 14th and 15th centuries.

Pope John Paul II elevated the church to the rank of minor basilica in 2002 . On September 22, 2012, the basilica was added to the list of monuments of Poland.

architecture

Choir view

The three-aisled basilica with a transept and a choir with a polygonal apse forms the floor plan of a cruciform church . The choir has three bays , the nave five. The west facade has two attached towers, both of which were not completed and only protrude at the height of the main and side aisles. The three richly carved portals with tympana form a collection of rare types of medieval iconography in Poland. The interior is provided with star vaults for the crossing and the chapels, cross ribs over the side aisles and a net vault over the main nave, which rests on rectangular columns. The upper storey is provided with windows. The vault thrust is intercepted with a buttress .

Furnishing

In the 18th century, the rich interior essentially burned up. In the choir room there is still a three-story stone sedile as a valuable part of the church furnishings ; the mannerist pulpit from 1592 is attributed to Caspar Berger from Liegnitz. The font is dated to the 16th century. The 4.5 meter high sacraments tower dates from the first half of the 19th century, in the neo-Gothic main altar there is a late Gothic sculpture of the Madonna and Child (end of the 15th century). A bell dates from 1318.
