distribution

The species is native to all of Europe with the exception of the extreme north and south-east. In the east the distribution area extends into the Caucasus and Central Asia as well as over the south of Siberia to the Russian part of the Far East .

biology

The oligophagous caterpillars live on various willow plants such as white poplar ( Populus alba ), aspen ( Populus tremula ), white willow ( Salix alba ) and sal willow ( Salix caprea ). They develop from April to June (according to other sources from May to June) in the female catkins of willows and poplars , where the first track stadiums in flowers and seeds minieren . Later stages live in silky webs between the seeds. Sometimes the caterpillars also drill into the bud base and hollow it out completely. The partially ejected droppings are visible in the form of a small pile in the middle of the bud. The last stages of caterpillars also feed between young leaves. The adult caterpillar leaves its web to pupate in cracks in the bark of its host plant. The very slender brown pupae lie in a tapering felt-like cocoon , which is covered with pieces of lichen. The flight time of the moths extends from June to August, according to another source from the second half of June to the beginning of September. The moths often walk around on tree trunks and are attracted by artificial light sources .
