goals and tasks

Food safety

The core task is to record, assess and manage health risks for the population in advance. The LGL guarantees food safety by examining over 80,000 samples of food , cosmetics and consumer goods every year. On the basis of concepts that the LGL creates in professional exchange with numerous federal and state institutions, risk-oriented samples are taken from the on-site authorities by the food inspection department in companies and in the trade and examined at the LGL.

health

The LGL also researches the health situation of the population in Bavaria and wants to motivate them to take responsibility for their own health-conscious behavior. To this end, it collects data to describe and monitor risks and develops prevention and action concepts.

Animal health

The LGL follows the animal disease situation or individual animal diseases in Bavaria. Animals, for example, to parasites , bacteria and viruses studied for the prevention of diseases are vaccines developed. The veterinarians at LGL also develop concepts for animal welfare and veterinary drug monitoring.

Occupational health and safety and product safety

A main focus is on the safety and health protection at the workplace as well as on the monitoring and inspection of technical products as well as the chemicals law . The LGL also provides technical and organizational support to the ministry and the trade supervisory authority .

research

The LGL is an authority that acts in terms of preventive consumer protection . A research goal is therefore to create the scientific basis for a modern consumer policy. Food chemistry , human medicine , veterinary medicine and molecular biology are examples of the LGL's fields of activity. These areas are subject to rapid changes in methods and a high level of knowledge gain. The application-oriented research of the LGL ensures that the analysis is always up to date. The LGL is heavily involved in scientific networks, as research projects are often carried out in cooperation with research institutions or universities.
