Bavaria barracks

Location of the Bayern barracks in Bavaria

BW

The Bayern barracks is a former military property in Munich - Freimann , which was built between 1936 and 1938 as General Wever barracks for the air force as part of the armament of the Wehrmacht . The barracks was sold to the state capital Munich and is currently being liquidated. Today it serves as an initial reception facility for refugees and as a temporary overnight accommodation for homeless people.

history

Until 1945, anti- aircraft units of the Wehrmacht air force were housed on the site . After the end of the Second World War , the area was taken over by the US Army . The barracks was named Henry Barracks in honor of the soldier Robert T. Henry who died near Luchem in 1944 . In the 1960s, units of the 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) of the 7th US Army were stationed there. In 1968 the Americans cleared the barracks. It has had its current name since it was taken over by the Bundeswehr on October 9, 1969.

Until the beginning of the 1990s , subordinate units of the former Military District Command  VI were stationed in the facility :

  • 1st and 3rd company of the Feldjäger Battalion 760 (1st / and 3rd / FJgBtl 760),
  • the telecommunications company 760 (FmKp 760),
  • the supply company 760 (NschKp 760),
  • the repair company 760 (InstKp 760) and
  • the training company staff service / military drivers 852 (AusbKp StDst / MKF 852).

There were also 56 of the Homeland Security Brigade

  • the Panzergrenadierbataillon  561 (PzGrenBtl 561) and
  • the Panzerartilleriebataillon 565 (PzArtBtl 565) and
  • the supply company 560 (NschKp 560) and
  • the repair company 560 (InstKp 560)

Up until 1992, the barracks were home to the specialist training company Munich (FachAusbKp MCH) and from 1990 to 1994 the pioneer training battalion (PiLehrBtl) 220 and the 661 hunter battalion from Heimatschutzbrigade 66, an equipment unit.

For the training of military drivers there was the driving school group Munich 6 in the property, the medical service was provided in the medical area 65/20, which also housed a group of dentists.

In 1994, the  Military Area Command VI / 1st Mountain Division , which was merged from the 1st Mountain Division and the former Military Area Command VI, moved into the barracks, which was added to the Military Area Command IV - Southern Germany in 2001. The Bavarian State Command (LKdoBY), the Catholic and Protestant military dean's office and the Bundeswehr technical school / civil training and further education support center B Munich (BwFachS- / ZAW-BeSt B MCH) were also stationed in the barracks. Since 2006, the latter has been the successor to the training company, which was located in the Luitpold barracks until 2005 and then in the Bayern barracks, in Munich. This in turn emerged in 1992 from the merger of the specialist training company Munich with the technical school company Munich.

In 2019, numerous relics of the Second World War were found on the site, including three racks of anti-aircraft cannons, 208 anti-aircraft shells of caliber 10.5 and a Brunsviga calculating machine .

Location and ownership

The barracks area covers an area of 48 hectares and is located in the north of Munich ( Freimann district ) south of Heidemannstrasse .

Parts of the property were already rented before the area was sold to the City of Munich by BwConsulting GmbH at the end of 2007 ; the last military installations left the area by the end of 2011.

Non-military use

After the military withdrew, unaccompanied minor refugees were housed in the Bayern barracks ; in March 2013 there were around 140 young people. The living conditions are precarious, over 140 young people from different countries live together in a confined space. They only receive minimal socio-educational support and there are frequent arguments with the guards. In 2014, in addition to the unaccompanied minor refugees, 1,900 adults were also accommodated in two houses.

During the winter months, the city of Munich will set up a cold protection facility for Munich homeless people in the Bayernkaserne. Since 2018, the homeless people who live under the Isarbrücken and Reichenbachbrücke have been repeatedly displaced by the city's actions. They defend themselves against accommodation in the Bayernkaserne with reference to the strict regulations and fear of violence and theft there.

New district

On the old grounds of the Bayern barracks, 5500 apartments for 15,000 people are to be created on 58 hectares by 2030. Besides Freiham, it is the largest housing project in Munich in the next few years.
