The Bechtheim Canal is an approximately 30 km long stream system in eastern Rheinhessen . It is created as a pond ditch from the ditches around Dittelsheim-Hessloch . The Teichgraben flows from Dittelsheim-Heßloch in an easterly direction to Alsheim . Shortly before Alsheim he passes the Weißmühle and then enters the Upper Rhine Graben . From here the water has a lower gradient, which means that it flows more slowly and is therefore also wider. From Alsheim the water is now called the Bechtheim Canal (although at least today there is no longer any water connection to Bechtheim ). From Alsheim the canal flows north to Guntersblum . Behind Guntersblum, the Bechtheim Canal bends in a north-easterly direction towards the Rhine. Across from the Kühkopf nature reserve , the water from the Bechtheim Canal is directed into the Rhine via the Guntersblum pumping station .

In the past, when the Rhine floods, the water in the canal in the Upper Rhine Rift has backed up and there was often flooding in the hinterland. The canal was also often used as a drainage ditch.

Since 2007 the Bechtheim Canal and its catchment area have been affected by a project to relocate the dike line. The aim of the measure is to expand the flood retention areas of the Rhine by 188 hectares with a retention volume of around 6.9 million cubic meters in the event of a 200-year flood.
