The Bedchem Church or Bethlehem Church (also: Bedghehem Church , Beyt Lahm Church ) is an Armenian Apostolic Church in the Julfa district of the Iranian city of Isfahan . It is one of the most important historical churches in the city and belongs to the Abbas I era . The church is located near the Sankt-Marien-Kirche . Bedchem Church was built by order of an Armenian merchant named Chadsche Petros. There are paintings and decorations on their walls depicting the life of Jesus Christ . 72 paintings by Armenian artists were placed in two rows.
Both the architecture and the gilded decorations of the dome are remarkable . The church contains Armenian inscriptions dating from 1627 and 1711. They commemorate personalities who distinguished themselves through charitable works for the Church.
The following inscription is on the southern portal :
- Pray before God for Chadsche Petros, who was a good man. He built the church on his own account for the immortality of his name and the name of his father (Wali Dschan) and the name of his mother (Shushan) and the name of his family in 1077 (in the Armenian calendar , which is 1627 in the Gregorian calendar ).
The church consists of three parts:
The church is rectangular in shape . Its walls are 31 m long and 14 m high. The dome is 26 m high. Opposite the church is a courtyard with two entrances.
