Beed (also Bid , Bir , Bhir ; Marathi : बीड Bīḍ [ biːɖ ], Urdu : بیڑ Bīṛ [ biːɽ ]) is a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra with around 146,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

It is the administrative seat of the Beed District . In the 1990s, due to the different spellings, there were considerations to rename the city in its former name Champavatinagar .

The city's early history remains in the dark. Based on archaeological finds, historians speculate that the place was founded between 1173 and 1317 by a Yadava ruler from Devagiri (today: Daulatabad ). Beed was part of the princely state of Hyderabad until 1956 . The reorganization of the Indian states in 1956 resulted in the state of Bombay . When it was split in 1960, Beed became part of Maharashtra State.

Geography and climate

geography

Beed is located in the highlands of Dekkan on the banks of the Bendsura River (also called Bindusara ), which is a tributary of the Godavari . The Bendsura rises 30 km southwest of Beed in the Balaghat mountain range near the village of Waghira . The river divides the city into a small eastern and a large western part. The terrain south and east of the city is slightly hilly due to the foothills of the Balaghat Mountains. Most of the city is on the river plain.

climate

The climate has a cycle that is determined by hot summers, cool winters and the monsoon season. The summers last from mid-February to June. The temperatures are between 31 ° C and 42 ° C. May is the hottest month in the district with an average temperature of 42 ° C. The monsoon season is between June and September. These months have both the most rainy days and rainfall. There are an average of 41 rainy days per year. Records from August 17, 1887 show a rainfall of 191.8 mm in 24 hours. Winter is short and dry. During this time of year the average temperatures are between 12 ° C and 20 ° C. With a cold front from the north, temperatures can drop to 3 ° C at night.

Attractions

Kankaleshwar Temple :

The temple is probably the oldest building in the city. Historians disagree on the age of the temple. The architectural style suggests that it was built during the Yadava dynasty. Probably during the reign of Singhana II (1210-1247), who also founded Daulatabad . The temple, whose design is similar to the cave temples of Ellora , is located in the middle of an artificial lake in the eastern part of the city. Numerous people and gods are carved into the stones.

Jama Masjid Mosque :

The construction of the mosque was initiated in 1627 by Jan Sipar Khan , an official of the Grand Mughal Jahangir . It is one of the largest mosques in Beed and is located in the city center. It has a total of three large domes and four minarets.

Khandoba Temple :

The Hemadpanthi-style temple is located in the eastern part of the city on a hill. He is considered a symbol of the city. Two symmetrical octagonal towers with a height of 21.33 meters, called the Towers of Light , are located in front of the temple. A large number of figures are carved into the towers, which are in poor condition.
