Beinn Dubh ( Gaelic : black mountain ) is a mountain on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . The 267 m high elevation is located in a sparsely populated region in the northeast of the island near the east coast. The closest settlements are Knocklearoch and Lossit in the northwest. It is stated that the ridge in which the Beinn Dubh is located consists of limestone at a distance of one kilometer , so that it is obvious that this also applies to the Beinn Dubh.
Beinn Dubh is not connected to the island's road network. The closest road is a single lane that connects the A846 at Ballygrant with the Glenegedale area. From the top there is a view over the Islay Sound to the neighboring island of Jura with the striking Paps of Jura .
Surroundings
About a kilometer north of the mountain are the remains of a dun , which indicates an early settlement of the region. The oval-shaped area measures 22–27 m in diameter and is surrounded by an average 2.5 m thick limestone wall. A cairn from more recent times is located directly north of the entrance area . With the exception of the foundation walls of a rectangular building from more recent times and of no historical significance, the area has no special features.
