The Cistus Symphytifolius ( Cistus symphytifolius ) is a plant type from the genus of cistus (Cistus) in the family of rockrose (Cistaceae).

description

The aromatic, strongly branched, evergreen shrub reaches heights of growth of 60 to 200 cm. The brownish branches break very easily. Stems, leaves and flower stalks are covered with glandular hairs. The opposite, fused to a sparse hairy sheath at the bottom leaves are stalked, with 5 to 12 cm long, ovoid-lanceolate, 2.2 to 4.4 times as long as broad leaf blade. The ribs protrude strongly on the underside of the leaf, which makes the leaf appear wrinkled. The texture is rough and sticky. Glandular hairs appear on the underside of the leaf only on these ribs.

The pink flowers reach a diameter of up to 6 centimeters. The pen is twice as long as the numerous bright yellow stamens . The inner sepals have a tip 5 to 6 mm long and are much larger than the outer sepals. The five-column capsule fruit is dark brown, puffed up and hairy only on the nerves. It produces more than 200 seeds that are dark gray.

Flowering time is from February to July.

Systematics

The scientific name Cistus symphytifolius was first described by Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck in 1786 . Important synonyms are Cistus vaginatus Dryand. and Rhodocistus berthelotianus Spach , nom. illegal.

The comfrey-leaved rockrose is divided into three varieties:

  • Cistus symphytifolius var. Symphytifolius : It differs by its dark green leaf blades with little network nerve on the upper side, which are richly covered with glandular hairs and sparsely with star hairs, which are 250 µm in diameter. The leaf sheaths are 10 to 14 mm long. The nominative clan is common on the north side of Tenerife and La Palma.
  • Cistus symphytifolius var. Canus Demoly : It differs from var. Symphytifolius by its gray-green leaf blades with a strong network of nerves on the upper side, which are sparsely covered with glandular hairs and densely with star hairs, which are 500 µm in diameter. The leaf sheaths are short at 9 to 11 mm. This variety occurs on the south side of La Palma.
  • Cistus symphytifolius var. Villosus Demoly : It differs from var. Symphytifolius by their simple hair tightly covered top of the leaf blade and the much less numerous glandular hairs on the Spreitenunterseite. This variety occurs on the south side of Tenerife.

Cistus symphytifolius var. Leucophyllus (Spach) Dans. is a synonym of Cistus ocreatus .

Occurrence

The comfrey rockrose is endemic to the Canary Islands of Tenerife and La Palma . The rock roses from Gran Canaria, El Hierro and La Gomera have been separated as related species.

It grows in the undergrowth of high-lying Canary Island pine forests , but also in Canary Island dwarf shrub heaths (with Chamaecytisus proliferus or Erica arborea ) in the transition to the Canary Island pine forest.

The comfrey rockrose is not considered endangered (LC = "Least Concern").
