The siege of Trebizond took place between 1205 and 1206 . The Seljuks besieged the capital of the Pontus region , Trebizond ; the siege ended with the victory of the Trapezunter.

prehistory

The siege of Trebizond arose from the attempt of the Seljuk Sultan Kai Chosrau I ( 1192 - 1196 ; 1205 - 1211 ) to conquer the capital of the Empire of Trebizond in order to destroy the newly established state ( 1204 ). Before this conflict, the Seljuk Sultan, who had just returned to the throne after he had his nephew Kılıç Arslan III. ( 1204 - 1205 ) had deposed the rival Danishmends the cities of eastern Asia Minorsnatched away. This move secured him a free hand in the siege of Trapezunts, which was defended by Emperor Alexios I Komnenos ( 1204 - 1222 ).

siege

The siege did not go as hoped and the Seljuks failed to take the city. After the sultan was worn down by the long, fruitless siege, an offer from the Latin Empire came to him, which offered him a common alliance against the Empire of Nikaia . Kai Chosrau I now gave up the siege to attack the Nicaeans instead . The Empire of Trebizond was saved.

consequences

A little later, the Seljuks conquered the city of Attaleia from the Niceans. Thus began a long campaign against the Nicaeans for the Sultan, until he fell in battle with them in 1211 .
