Thomas Blockhaus (* 1960 in Haan ) is a German theater and radio director and author.

Life

Thomas Blockhaus grew up in Solingen (North Rhine-Westphalia), was a competitive swimmer and water polo player and finished his school days with the Abitur. After community service in the pathology department of a hospital, he studied theater studies , philosophy and art history at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . During his studies he worked on various stages in Munich and Salzburg, including as a stage technician , equipment assistant (" Waiting for Godot - for children" by Samuel Beckett at the Theater der Jugend, Munich) and production dramaturge ("Beppi in luck" after Stallerhof and Geisterbahn) by Franz Xaver Kroetz at the Münchner Volkstheater).

Between 1987 and 1992, as assistant director , he was a permanent member of the ensemble of the Bühnen der Stadt Lübeck (general manager: Hans Thoenies), the Munich Volkstheater (manager: Ruth Drexel ) and the Bremen theater (general manager: Tobias Richter). During this time, the collaboration with the directors András Fricsay , Peter Palitzsch , Christian Kohlmann, Ruth Drexel, Rolf Stahl and Katharina Thalbach was particularly influential .

In May 1992 he made his debut at the Bremen Theater as a director with the play Before the Retirement of Thomas Bernhard . Since then he has worked as a freelance theater director, a. a. in Bremen, Eisenach, Hanover and Cologne. At the end of 2010, Michael Cooney's “Comedy of the Old Town” opened in Freiburg with his staging of Cash on delivery - And Eternally Rushing Money .

Since 1994 he has also worked for radio in addition to the theater. Initially as assistant director for radio plays and radio features at Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln (WDR), where he was a. a. the directors Norbert Schaeffer , Leonhard Koppelmann , Walter Adler , Jörg Schlüter and Petra Feldhoff introduced the art of radio play direction. He has directed the radio himself since 2000 and has since produced over 350 radio plays and features. In addition to his radio play adaptations by international novelists, special highlights were his literary features about Philip Roth , Don DeLillo , Ian McEwan , Oskar Roehler , Toni Morrison and Amy Sackville .

Since the late 1990s, he has been making trips into the event industry, where he designed and staged small and large events for well-known companies for various event agencies (e.g. in 2001 for Kogag Solingen in the German pavilion at the Hanover Expo, “The new 7 series BMW ").

Thomas Blockhaus has also been an author since 2005. After several radio play adaptations of novels (including Cosmopolis by Don DeLillo), he wrote his first radio feature in 2010 with an acoustic portrait of his hairdresser, which was followed by more. In 2011 he wrote Memo , his first self-written radio play . He staged all of his radio plays and features himself, all of which were produced and originally broadcast by WDR. Many were repeated in German-speaking countries by other broadcasters. All of his radio plays are published by Hartmann & Stauffacher Verlag in Cologne.

Thomas Blockhaus also works as a director and author of radio play adaptations for CD publications. In addition to audio books and a science feature series, there are also children's radio plays ( Princess Lillifee and the enchanted island , Till Wiesentroll ) in stores.
