Belantis (own spelling: "BELANTIS") is the largest amusement park in Central Germany . It is located in Saxony , south of Leipzig on the suburbs of the cities of Zwenkau and Leipzig, directly on the Autobahn 38 with its own exit "Leipzig- Neue Harth ". Over 60 attractions and shows are spread over eight themed worlds on the 27  hectare area of the former Zwenkau open- cast lignite mine .

history

The park was opened on April 5, 2003 after 19 months of construction. After Leipzig owned the “largest entertainment establishment in Germany” with Luna Park on Lake Auensee from 1914 to 1932 , Belantis continues the pre-war history. The initial investment was around € 50 million. The construction was preceded by intensive market research, because in all of East Germany there was no amusement park like Phantasialand , Hansa-Park , Heide-Park or the Europapark Rust . The investors, including mainly private German radio stations ( Regiocast , including Radio SAW , Radio PSR , Radio Schleswig-Holstein , Landeswelle Thüringen and Radio BOB), planned a large initial investment and then a steady expansion from season to season, as it is had developed in the history of West German parks; however, Belantis should reach its goal much faster thanks to the high initial investments.

In the first season, 2003, the park had 500,000 visitors, although, due to the park's location in a devastated brown coal landscape, the greenery in the park only slowly began to sprout. At around 50 hectares, the available area was so large that only half of it was initially included in the actual park. The visitors came from Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Berlin and Brandenburg in particular, but many West Germans also visited Belantis.

In the following years, Belantis grew steadily with further attractions and offers, the number of visitors initially fell slightly and then rose again. In 2010, 578,000 visitors came. The Easter days at the beginning of the season and the Halloween days at the end of the season as well as nightly parties such as the SummerOpening Party are particularly popular. After the end of the 2012 season, the park announced that 5.5 million people had visited the park since it opened in 2003.

On June 26, 2010 the new roller coaster “Huracan” with five inversion elements from the “Euro-Fighter” model from Gerstlauer Amusement Rides was opened. The fourth roller coaster is the "Cobra des Amun Ra" in the "Valley of the Pharaohs", which opened on July 4th, 2015

The amusement park's turnover in 2013 was 9.5 million euros; in 2015, 11.3 million euros are expected. Entrance fees make up around 70 percent of sales, gastronomy around 20 percent and souvenir shops around 10 percent. For example, there are 5 million euros in personnel costs, 500,000 euros for repairs and 300,000 euros in electricity costs per year.

In February 2018, the park was sold to the Spanish amusement park operator Parques Reunidos , which owns over 60 water, animal and amusement parks worldwide - including Movie Park Germany in Bottrop. According to media reports, the purchase price was 26 million euros. The then managing director and shareholder Erwin Linnenbach left the company. The new managing director was the German-Syrian Bazil El Atassi, who had been in charge of the park since 2014.

Parques Reunidos has announced that it will invest in an indoor adventure world and possibly a VR 3D coaster in the coming years. The Belantis amusement park would also be expanded to include another theme world with new rides at short notice.

In September 2019 it was announced that Parques Reunidos had been acquired by the Piolin BidCo Investment Group. This officially confirmed a takeover offer made in spring 2018. Piolin BidCo consists of the three investment companies EQT Partners, Miles Capital and Alba Capital Partners. The group is led by the Swedish Wallenberg family .
