Bellamy is a census-designated place and unincorporated area in Sumter County in the state of Alabama in the United States .

geography

Bellamy is located in western Alabama in the southern United States. It is about 14 miles east of the Mississippi border .

Nearby places include Livingston (10 km north), York (11 km northwest), Ward (15 km southwest), Cuba (19 km west) and Demopolis (21 km east). The next larger city with 212,000 inhabitants is about 150 kilometers northeast of Birmingham .

history

The town developed around a sawmill owned by the Allison brothers. When a post office opened in 1901, Charles Allison assumed that a place would usually be named after its most famous citizen, which is why he chose Bellamy based on the Union veteran Volney Bellamy.

Alabama State Route 8 and US Highway 80 run from the west to the east of the village, which connects to US Highway 11 in the west and Interstate 20 three kilometers west , which extends over a length of 2,470 kilometers from Texas as far as South Carolina .

Demographics

The 2010 census showed a population of 543, divided between 226 households and 138 families. The population density was 56 inhabitants per square kilometer. 90.8% of the population were black, 8.3% white and 0.9% Asian. 1.3% were Hispanics or Latin Americans of any ethnicity . For every 100 women there were about 80 men.
