Bellmead is a city in McLennan County in the US state of Texas in the United States of America .
geography
The city is located on US Highway 35 in East Texas and has a total area of 16.1 km², without any significant water surface. The distance to Waco in the southwest is 9 km and to Dallas in the northeast about 150 km.
history
The place was founded in the mid- 1920s as a replenishment depot with ticket office and sales outlets of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad . After several families moved to this area to settle here, the first school, named Bellmead School , was built after the Belle Meade Farms , a horse ranch and breed that was very well known at the time.
In 1940 the place had 25 inhabitants. This only changed when the James Connally Air Force Base was opened in the northeast and in 1949 the population was already 800. In 1960 the place had 5127 residents and 85 shops.

According to the 2000 census, 9,214 people lived here in 3,367 households and 2,333 families. The population density was 571.0 inhabitants per km². The racial the population is composed of 68.87% White, 14.62% African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 13.18% non-American ethnic groups. About 2.05% are of two or more races, and 23.82% of the population are Spanish or Latin American.
Of the 3,367 households, 35.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 46.9% of these were married couples living together. 16.8% were single mothers and 30.7% were non-families. 26.3% of all households were single households and there were people living in 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.28.
29.5% of the population were under 18 years old, 11.3% 18 to 24, 29.0% 25 to 44, 18.3% 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 95.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 91.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 28,189 USD , and the median income for a family 31,927 USD. Males had a median income of $ 25,253 versus $ 17,463 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,100. 19.8% of the population and 16.1% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 28.4% were children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 11.6% were 65 or older.
