The deep sea flatheads (Bembridae) are a family of the perch-like (Perciformes). They live at depths of 150 to 650 meters in the Indo-Pacific from the Gulf of Aden and South Africa to Japan, Hawaii and Peru .

features

The fish are elongated and have a cylindrical body covered with ctenoid scales . They are eleven to 30 centimeters long and are usually reddish in color. Your head is moderately to significantly flattened, the large mouth with teeth on the jaw margins, the ploughshare and the palatine bone . The pelvic fins are located directly below the base of the pectoral fin . They are supported by a fin spine and five soft rays. The pectoral fins have 21 to 27 rays , the first dorsal fin has six to twelve hard rays, the second eight to twelve soft rays. The number of vertebrae is 26 to 27. The sideline is complete. The bottom dwellers lack the swim bladder . They predatorily feed on small animals.

Systematics

The genus Bembradium , which originally also belonged to the Bembridae, was placed in the Plectrogeniidae family in early 2018 .
