He studied at the Leucorea in Wittenberg and on his return became Holstein-Gottorfischer Privy Councilor and Provost in Preetz . Benedikt von Ahlefeldt had a very high reputation, so that no important decision in the state was made or decided without him, among other things he ended the border disputes with Denmark. He later translated the Schleswig-Holstein “court court order” into German.

He, who was a member of the Princely War Council during the war with the Dithmarschern in 1569, later got into violent arguments with his brother Wulff von Ahlefeldt over various things, in particular over the ownership and use of the outer dike on the Elbe. This fraternal dispute did not only result in lawsuits and legal disputes, but also in severe acts of violence and passed on to their sons Detlev von Ahlefeldt and Marquard von Ahlefeldt , under whom bloody mortal feuds developed, so that they ultimately killed each other.

In 1626, Benedikt von Ahlefeldt was elected provost of the Uetersen monastery and held this office until 1634.
