Bengt Hambraeus (born January 29, 1928 in Stockholm , † September 21, 2000 in Apple Hill , Ontario ) was a Swedish composer, organist and musicologist.

Hambraeus studied organ with Alf Linder from 1944 to 1948 and musicology with Carl-Allan Moberg in Uppsala from 1947 to 1956 . He also completed his organ training with Ernst Karl Rössler in Germany (1949–52) and studied composition with Olivier Messiaen (1951–55) at the Darmstadt Summer Courses .

From 1957 to 1972 Hambraeus worked for the Swedish radio, first as a program producer, from 1964 as head of the chamber music department and from 1968 as production manager. In 1972 he settled in Canada, where he taught at the McGill University Music Faculty until his retirement in 1995.

The organ was at the center of Hambraeus' compositional work; In addition, he also composed several stage and orchestral works, pieces for chamber music and works for electroacoustic instruments. He was a pioneer of electronic music in Sweden. His piece Doppelrohr II (1955) was one of the first Scandinavian works of this kind, and his composition Constellations I (1958) influenced Ligeti's Volumina (1962). He was awarded the Neeme Järvi Prize of the University of Gothenburg in 1993 and the Hilding Rosenberg Prize in 1995. In 1986 he received the highest Swedish award for artists, the royal medal Litteris et Artibus .

Hambraeus published a number of musicological publications, including on Buxtehude's organ music . In 1997 Aspects of Twentieth-Century Performance Practice: Memories and Reflections was published .
