life and work

After studying medicine until 1962 and doctorate in 1964, Saltin worked as a lecturer in exercise physiology at the Karolinska Institute with Per-Olof Åstrand in Stockholm until 1968, and from 1968 as professor of human physiology. After being appointed to the August Krogh Institute at the University of Copenhagen in 1973, he was Professor of Physiology there until 1990. From 1990 to 1993 he was again at the Karolinska Institute before he got his own institute in Copenhagen in 1993, namely the Institute for Muscle Physiology . He also held visiting professorships at several universities, but also welcomed committed training scientists and exercise physiologists from all over the world to his institute. With his own research network, he ensured networking in research between Dänemerk and Sweden in the field of exercise physiology. His Copenhagen Muscle Research Center (CMRC) cooperated in his muscle research center. with the August Krogh Institute. the Panum Institute. the Bispebjerg Hospital. and the Capitol Hospital. in Copenhagen.

His work and research subjects were the basics of human performance and the effects of physical activity and training. The institutions he directed in Sweden and Copenhagen became known and visited research centers for exercise physiology worldwide. Between 1960 and 2014 he wrote 446 research papers that are listed in PubMed.

Saltin himself was a successful orienteer, from 1982 to 1988 president of the international orienteering federation IOF and chairman of the medical commission of the international ski federation ( FIS ). In these functions, he was committed to the fight against doping .
