Benjamin Best

Benjamin Best (* 1976 in Berlin ) is a German journalist , film director and book author. He is considered an expert on betting fraud in sports .

Life and work

Benjamin order, the German-American roots, made in 1996 by the three-Linden High School in Berlin-Nikolassee the High School . Until 2003 he studied law , English and sports science at the Humboldt University in Berlin . He then studied sports journalism at the German Sport University Cologne . Since 2005 he has been working mainly for WDR as a freelance journalist . Since 2007 he has been dealing with betting manipulation in sports , mainly in football and tennis. In addition, several contributions from him ran in the sports show and the WDR show Sport Inside . About the 2009 European football betting scandal he researched for several public channels and Financial Times Germany .

In 2010, WDR5 produced its radio feature Goal, Victory, Fraud - Betting Manipulation in Sports , for which it was named “CNN Journalist of the Year” 2011.

In 2012 the WDR broadcast the report Pharma- Sklaven, a film by Rebecca Gudisch and Benjamin Best, in the series die story . With the report, the two authors were nominated for the German Human Rights Film Prize 2012. In 2013 his non-fiction book The Purchased Football - Manipulated Games and Deceived Fans was published .

Best directed and produced the feature documentary Dirty Games - The Business with Sport with his own company .

Eurosport hired Benjamin Best as an expert in sports policy and doping as part of the broadcaster's coverage of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Best is one of the regular authors of the television program WDR Sport inside . In 2019, a report was broadcast there, Gefangen in Qatar , which dealt with the problematic work and life situation of guest workers in Qatar who were working on construction sites for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. For this research he was named Sports Journalist of the Year 2019 by Medium Magazin. In 2020, Best and the Azerbaijani journalist Xədicə İsmayılova were awarded the Prize for the Freedom and Future of the Media from the Sparkasse Leipzig Media Foundation.
