Benjamin Elon ( Hebrew בנימין אֵלון, Born November 10, 1954 in Jerusalem ; † 5. May 2017 ) was an Israeli politician and orthodox he rabbi . His father was the lawyer and deputy minister of justice Menachem Elon .

biography

Life

Elon studied at Mercaz Harav Kook and the Jeschiwat ha-Idra , where he served as rabbi in 1978 ordained was. Together with Chanan Porat he founded the Beit Orot Talmudic College and became dean. Elon was married and had six children. He was the author of God's Covenant with Israel: Establishing Biblical Boundaries in Today's World (2005).

politics

As a member of the National Union , he was Minister of Tourism from October 31, 2001 to March 14, 2002 . He was also a member of the Knesset for Moledet and the National Union from 1996 and 2009.

Elon wanted the Israeli settlement policy to continue in the West Bank and a return to Gush Katif . He rejected the Road map for peace . He represented a self-drawn plan - haJosma israelit ( Hebrew היוֹזְמָה יִשְׂרְאֵלִית; dt. "the Israeli initiative") or haMitwä ha-Asori le-Schalom ( Hebrew המִתְוֶה האֲזוֹרִי לשָׁלוֹם; dt. "the right way to peace") - which provided for a formal annexation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip by Israel, in return the Palestinians should voluntarily move to Jordan .
