Benjamin Hederich
Benjamin Hederich (born December 12, 1675 in Geithain ; † July 18, 1748 in Großenhain ) was a German lexicon and textbook author.
Life
After attending the Princely School in Grimma, Hederich studied in Leipzig and Wittenberg . From 1702 he worked as a teacher, first at the school in Kloster Berge , later as rector in Großenhain . In his spare time he wrote introductions to numerous sciences, as well as dictionaries and textbooks of Greek and Latin. His instruction in the most noble historical sciences covers the areas of chronology , genealogy , heraldry , numismatics and diplomacy; without using this term, he put together a canon of auxiliary sciences that has remained almost unchanged to this day.
Hederich's Latin dictionaries were reproduced as microfiches in 1988 . Other works by Hederich are still available as microfiches.
effect
The Thorough Mythological Dictionary , cited as the “Hederich”, is still useful for Goethe research today, as the first and second editions edited by Johann Joachim Schwabe were in Goethe's possession and were widely used by him. It was also praised in the correspondence with Friedrich Schiller . Even Kleist drew from his mythological knowledge.
