Bent Christensen (director)

Bent Christensen (born May 28, 1929 in Gunderup near Aalborg , † January 6, 1992 in Keldernæs ) was a Danish film director , film producer , screenwriter and actor . He achieved his greatest fame through the films Naboerne and Harry and his valet ( Harry og kammertjeneren ), where he directed . He also worked with the writer Leif Panduro , who also wrote some templates and scripts.

Life

Christensen originally worked as a priest in the Danish People's Church and then also worked as a journalist before he began training as an actor at the private theater in Elevskole in 1952 and made his debut as an actor in the same year. The following year he made his breakthrough in the play Ikke som de andre in the then Allé-Scenen-Theater , today's Betty Nansen Teatret . After a few different theater roles and appearances at different houses, he was hired for Danish television by Danmarks Radio in 1953 . Christensen worked there in various entertainment programs, television formats and in the Danish television theater, as well as being active as a producer and director. During the same period he made his debut as a theater director and worked in the 1950s at the Frederiksberg Teater , ABC Teatret and from 1956 at the Det Ny Teater . In the middle of the 1950s he began to appear as an actor in various films and in 1958 he directed the film Pigen og vandpytten for the first time independently behind the camera.

In 1962 he established himself as a producer in several Danish feature films. In the following years he was director of the Danish film company ASA from 1964 to 1968 and of the film studio Kinopalæet from 1968 , while at the same time he directed and produced several films and appeared as an actor in various films. The collaboration with the writer Leif Panduro was particularly successful , for example in the television series Smuglerne (Smuggler), which is popular in Denmark .

His 1961 film Harry and His Chamberlain was awarded the Bodil for best Danish film and was nominated for an Oscar in 1962 in the category for best foreign language film . His 1966 film Naboerne was awarded at the 5th Moscow International Film Festival .

From the end of the 1960s he also achieved international recognition and gave various lectures at various film schools in several European countries and in the United States. From 1970 to 1972 he was the director of Den Danske Filmskole .

In the 1980s, Bent Christensen was much less active in the television and film industry and gradually withdrew from this area during this period, but then worked again on some projects at the end of the 1980s. Instead, he mainly worked as a freelance communications consultant, including for the Danish Social Democrats and for some politicians of this party during this time. In the last years of his professional life he ran a multimedia company. After his retirement he lived in Lolland until his death .

family

Christensen's first marriage was to actress Lily Broberg . In his second marriage, he was married to the production assistant and later actress and social democratic politician Lene Møller .

After his death he was buried in Stokkemarke Kirkegård (Stokkemarke Cemetery) in Lolland.
