Benzylpenicillin-Benzathine or Benzathine-Benzylpenicillin (also benzathine penicillin ) is a medicinal substance and a salt of benzylpenicillin (penicillin G). It is used, among other things, for the long-term treatment of syphilis and for prophylaxis against relapse in rheumatic fever.

The formation of salts with N , N -dibenzylethylenediamine creates a compound (“depot penicillin”) that is only sparingly soluble in water, which after intramuscular injection in the tissue depot is slowly hydrolyzed to form the pharmacologically active benzyl penicillin and then absorbed. Depending on the dosage and sensitivity to the pathogen, therapeutically effective serum levels can be maintained for at least two weeks.

The antibiotic was patented by the Wyeth company in 1953 . Today the active ingredient is on the market as a generic . In 1977, Benzylpenicillin-Benzathine was added to the World Health Organization 's list of Essential Medicines .
