The Berettyó (Romanian: Barcău or Beretău ) is a 167.3 km (134 km according to other information) long river in Transylvania in Romania and in northeast Hungary .

Its source is in Sălaj County in Romania. It crosses the Romanian Bihor county and the counties Hajdú-Bihar and Békés in Hungary.

It flows into the Sebes-Körös ( Rapid Screech ; Romanian: Crişul Repede ) at Szeghalom . The city of Berettyóújfalu is named after the river .
