The mine Le Puy is a disused ore mine in Canton Nontron in the northwestern Massif Central in France . Was funded mainly silver- galena ( galena ). With a total extraction of around 1200 t of ore, Le Puy was a small mine.

geography

location

The mine is located 3.5 kilometers as the crow flies southeast of Nontron , immediately to the right of the D 707 from Nontron to Saint-Pardoux-la-Rivière , at an altitude of 278 meters above sea level .

geology

The mine followed an east-southeast (115 to 120 °) trending ore vein in flat paragneiss . The 0.5 to 1.20 meter thick , steeply north dipping vein contained quartz and barite as gangue and was mineralized with the minerals galena (very massive), sphalerite ( zinc blende ), pyrite and other lead oxides. It lies immediately to the east of the south-south-east trending (160 °) marginal fault of the Massif Central, which manifests itself here in the terrain as a clear topographical break.

Similar to the Neuil mine , located a little further to the south-east, this is also a hydrothermal vein, the ores of which were deposited in the temperature range 300 to 150 ° C. The corridor belongs to the zinc blende-pyrite-lead-luster-chalcopyrite association, but does not contain any chalcopyrite. The ore content is believed to be due to the cooling phase of the Piégut-Pluviers-Granodiorite intruding from the paragneiss , less than a kilometer to the north. The tourmalinitization that can be observed is a further indication of the relative proximity of the granodiorite .

mineralogy

The Le Puy deposit contains the following minerals:

  • Barite: beige to white gait in the habit of leaves. Can become predominant in places. Is overgrown by galena grains.
  • Galena: Forms quite large cubes in quartz, grown as grains on barite. Average silver content at around 400 grams per ton, but can occasionally reach peaks of 1700 grams / ton.
  • Cerussite : Clears geodes that were in the upper section of the corridor.
  • Marcasite : Occurs in powder form or in a cockscomb habit .
  • Quartz: Usually the most common gait.
  • Pyrite
  • Sphalerite: As coarse masses with a silver content of up to 946 grams / ton.
  • Tourmaline (here: Schörl ): As fissure coatings in feldspar-rich secretions in the paragneiss.

history

The mining of the deposit began in 1899. A few years before the mining permit expired in 1939, the mine was closed. Three shafts served as access to the deposit . The main shaft of Sainte Louise was 75 meters deep . From it four levels had been driven into the mountain at depths of 13, 33, 53 and 70 meters . The deepest level reached daylight again via a 670 meter long tunnel after breaking through another vein (the Pré Granger vein ). From the facility, the former administrative building, the residence of the workforce, which today are carriers House , the stores of explosives and foundation remnants get the wet clothes, the wooden headframe was abgebrissen.

Delivery rate

In total, around 1000 tons of 65–75 percent lead concentrate, 100 tons of 45–50 percent zinc concentrate, 100 tons of 35–50 percent pyrite concentrate and 200 kilograms of silver were mined in Le Puy.

The vein has been completely mined to a depth of 70 meters.
