Bern is a village in Nemaha County in the US state of Kansas . 204 inhabitants live in the village. The population density is 597.8 inhabitants / km².
geography
Bern is located in northern Kansas near the border with the state of Nebraska in the Rolling Hills . Bern is 107 km north of Topeka , about 135 km northwest of Kansas City , 122 km southeast of Lincoln and about 143 km south of Omaha . Bern has an area of 0.7 km², of which 0 km² is water.
history
The county's first settlers were five Swiss families. They were called Meshing, Blauer, Minger, Lehman and Spring. They came to the county in 1854 and 1855. They were the first to cultivate the land around Bern. Bern was founded by Colonel Henry Baker on the newly built Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railroad during the winter of 1886/1887 . The first train arrived in Bern on April 3, 1887, and the last on January 25, 1967.
