Hanover

A royal order of July 20, 1887 elevated the former veterinary school to the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover . After an eighth full teaching position had been created in 1895/96, Bernard Malkmus was appointed by a unanimous decision of the teaching staff on May 1, 1895 (initially provisional) as teacher for surgery and head of the hospital clinic for small pets. Since the head of the large animal clinic (Augustin Lustig) fell ill, he also took over his area of activity.

Appointed professor in 1896 , Malkmus took over the management of the hospital clinic for large animals on August 11, 1896.

When the university moved to Misburger (today Bischofsholer) Damm in autumn 1899, the clinic for large animals was separated into a department for internal and external diseases. Malkmus kept the direction of the medical and forensic clinic and the lectures on special pathology and therapy as well as forensic veterinary medicine. Malkmus was an authority on diagnostics and forensics , which included extensive peer review.

Bernard Malkmus was the first elected rector of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover from 1913 to 1915 . At first he could do little to expand the university because the First World War broke out in August 1914 and he was drafted as a corps veterinarian . Malkmus did not return to Hanover until April 7, 1917.

With his farewell lecture on March 4, 1925, he was appointed April 1, 1925 emeritus .
