Bernd Skodzig

Bernd Ernst Skodzig (* 1969 in Datteln ) is a German costume designer who designs large-format costume sets for international theaters and opera houses for the fields of drama , opera and dance .

Life

Following his studies and assistantship with Jürgen Rose at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart , Skodzig moved to London, where he worked as a freelancer in the textile collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum with a focus on historical clothing from the 16th to 18th centuries.

His career as a costume designer at the theater began with the collaboration with the director Thomas Ostermeier and the choreographer Sasha Waltz , with whom he  designed costumes for contemporary pieces and modern choreographies at the New Berlin Schaubühne in 2000  . His costume design for the stage production "Body" by the choreographer and director Sasha Waltz was his breakthrough. Since its premiere in 2000, "Körper" has been shown over 150 times around the world and filmed by the Arte broadcaster .

Since 1999 Skodzig has designed costumes for productions by Sasha Waltz, such as for the works "No Body", "Continu" and the opera works "Romeo et Juliet" by Hector Berlioz for the Paris National Opera Bastille with conductor Valery Gergiev and for the  Milanese Scala .

In 2013 Skodzig was entrusted with designing the costumes to mark the 100th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky’s work Le sacre du printemps for the opening of the New Mariinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg and the anniversary event at the Parisian Théâtre des Champs-Élysées . In 2014, on the occasion of the opening of the Berliner Festwochen , Skodzig designed the costumes for Richard Wagner's  Der Tannhäuser , staged by Sasha Waltz under the direction of Daniel Barenboim for the Berlin State Opera in the Schillertheater.

Skodzig aroused public interest with his designs for the productions of the company “Sasha Waltz and Guests” on the occasion of a series of opening events of important buildings in which choreographic installations by Sasha Waltz were installed. Skodzig designed the costumes for the inauguration event of the Jewish Museum Berlin , for the opening of the New Museum Berlin and the Museo MAXXI in Rome to match the choreographies for the special architecture of the buildings .

The current director of the Berlin State Opera, Peter Mussbach , engaged Skodzig in 2005 for the costumes for the world premieres at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden . In the same year Skodzig designed the costume design for the world premiere of Hans Zender's “Chief Joseph”. For the world premiere of Hans Werner Henze's concert opera Phädra at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, Skodzig designed the costumes for the stage set of the work. At the same time, Skodzig was entrusted with designing the costumes for the production “The Ring of the Nibelung” directed by Tankred Dorst and conducted by Christian Thielemann for the Bayreuth Festival.

Skodzig also designs costume sets for the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus , the Frankfurter Schauspielhaus, the Schauspielhaus Zürich , the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels and the Staatstheater Stuttgart.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Russian Ballet, Bernd Skodzig designed the costumes for the new production “Le Sacre Du Printemps” for the choreography by Sasha Waltz. The premiere was part of the opening ceremony of the “New Marinsky Theater” in St. Petersburg. The premiere at the Paris Theater Du Champs Elysse was broadcast by ARTE. The piece passed into the repertoire of the Marinsky Theater. Shortly afterwards it was at the Theater de la Monnai and at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden. Numerous guest appearances at international opera houses follow.

Bernd Skodzig designed the costumes for the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden for the production of Richard Wagner's "Tannhäuser", directed and choreographed by Sasha Waltz. Another engagement followed at the Dutch National Opera House in Amsterdam for Berliosz's opera “Romeo et Juliette” in the choreography of Sasha Waltz.

Bernd Skodzig received a lot of attention for his elaborate costumes for the ballet performances "Faust 1" and "Faust 2" for the choreographer Xin Peng Wang at the Dortmund Opera, for which he created impressive, large-format, historical figure tables. A series of further collaborations with the choreographer followed. A highlight of this collaboration were Bernd Skodzig's fantastic costumes for the three-part ballet cycle for “Divine Comedy” by Dante Alighieri. The cycle consists of the three works "Inferno", "Prugatorio" and "Paradiso". In February 2012, “Paradiso” marked the end of the cycle. All three parts could then be seen one after the other.

This was followed by an engagement for the company Sasha Waltz and Guests with the drafts for the choreography “Rauschen”, which premiered at the Volksbühne in Berlin.

In 2019 and 2020, Bernd Skodzig designed the costumes for another world premiere at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden with the new co-ballet director Sasha Waltz. The world premiere of the work SYMPHONY XXL by the contemporary musician Georg Friedrich Haas in the choreography and staging by Sasha Waltz at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, postponed to May 2012, is awaited with great excitement, for which Bernd Skodzig the progressive costumes for the dancers of the Berlin State Ballet.

In 2008 he was appointed by Florence von Gerkan as a visiting professor at the Berlin University of the Arts for the department of costume design, where he teaches temporarily.

In addition to his work for theater, opera and dance, Bernd Skodzig designs luxurious silk jacquardts that are offered in the bespoke area under his label "Thadeus Fine Silks".

Bernd Skodzig works as a freelancer and lives in Berlin. Long stays and journeys connect him to his adopted home Great Britain, especially to North Wales.
