Life

After an apprenticeship as a housekeeper and an internship at the VEB Geological Research and Exploration in Freiberg, Lahl studied geology at the mining engineering school "Georgius Agricola" in Zwickau, which he completed as an engineer. During this time he was entrusted with research on old mining for the state plan topics “diamond synthesis” and “new ceramic raw materials”. From 1991 until he retired in 2002, he worked as an independent entrepreneur (managing director and partner in two gravel sand opencast mines). He lives in Chemnitz .

Since the 1970s, Lahl has been primarily concerned with the mining history of his hometown Annaberg and has published several books on the history of mining, geology and the mining culture of the Ore Mountains . The focus of his research is on mining practices.

His biography Barbara Uthmanns , published by Chemnitzer Verlag in 2014 , was awarded the Kammweg Literature Prize in 2015 in the non-fiction category. Because of his “services to mining and local research in the Annaberg area”, the city of Annaberg-Buchholz named him “Honorary Miner of the Im Gößner Visitor Mine” on Advent 2016.
