Bernhard Christoph Ludwig Natorp (born November 12, 1774 in Werden ad R .; † February 8, 1846 in Münster ) was a Prussian pedagogue, clergyman and liberal school administrator.

Life

Natorp came from a Lutheran family of preachers. His study of theology in Halle (1792–1794), where he was a member of the Corps Guestphalia Halle, was followed by a brief position as a teacher and then a theological activity. Through his commitment to reforming schools and his first educational writings, Natorp had already earned the reputation of a school expert as a preacher in Essen . In 1804 he was given the commissariat of the Bochum school district.

In 1809 Wilhelm von Humboldt appointed him from Essen as senior consistorial and school councilor in the Kurmärkische government in Potsdam and at the same time appointed him an advisory member of the newly created section for culture and public education . During the years of the Prussian reforms , he worked on behalf of Süvern on the parts of the Prussian school law draft of 1819 that concerned elementary schooling ; At the same time he reorganized the elementary school teacher training in Kurmark and later in the province of Brandenburg under the conditions of enormous financial scarcity . The establishment of a nationwide network of school teacher conference societies was particularly successful .

Back in Westphalia in the function of senior consistorial councilor since 1816, during the restoration years Natorp was one of those liberal administrative officials who ensured that the restorative tendencies never reached the school reality unbroken.

Natorp appears in his works as an eclecticist of enlightened and neo-humanist ideas. He is not only regarded as an advocate of a seminar-style primary school teacher training that was demanding for the time, but also as a “pioneer of music didactics” (Weyer).

From 1836 to 1846 Natorp was Vice General Superintendent of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia.
