Bernhard Matfeldt

Bernhard Matfeldt (born May 19, 1661 in Hamburg , † July 30, 1720 ibid) was a German lawyer , councilor and mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Origin and family

Matfeldt was a son of the Hamburg councilor Franz Matfeldt (1618-1692) and his wife Barbara Anckelmann, daughter of the jurate at the main church Sankt Petri Diedrich Anckelmann (1602-1643). The mayor of Buxtehude , Bernd Matfeldt (1582–1661), was his grandfather.

On April 12, 1693, he married Elisabeth Twestreng, daughter of the mayor Barthold Twestreng (1612–1668). His daughter Margaretha (1696-1725) married the senior elder Philipp Boetefeur (1692-1766) in 1718 .

Live and act

Born in Hamburg, Matfeldt attended the Academic Gymnasium from 1677 to 1682 and then studied law with August Benedict Carpzov at the University of Leipzig . On June 30, 1685 he defended a dissertation with Carpzov and then traveled to France. At the University of Orléans he completed his studies on February 5, 1686 as a doctor of law . After completing his studies, he traveled to France, England, the Netherlands and Germany and then returned to Hamburg.

In Hamburg he became a lawyer and from 1698 an assessor at the lower court . On December 11, 1703, Matfeldt was elected councilor. He did not want to accept this choice because of the disputes between the council and the citizens . But since he was re-elected on December 17, 1703, he finally accepted the election. In 1711 and 1712 he was councilor and praetor . On July 24, 1716 he was elected mayor.

Matfeldt died in 1720 at the age of 59. He left a library that later became the property of the Hamburg State and University Library . A mayor's penny was minted on his death .
