Bernhard Moritz

Bernhard Moritz (born September 13, 1859 in Guben , † September 22, 1939 in Berlin ) was a German orientalist .

Life

Bernhard Moritz studied Protestant theology and Oriental Studies at the University of Berlin , where he in 1882 with a thesis on Bar Hebraeus Dr. phil. received his doctorate . For the years 1883/1884 and 1884/1885 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute , which enabled him to stay longer in Syria and Mesopotamia .

After his return, Moritz worked as a research assistant at the Egyptian department of the Royal Museums in Berlin and accompanied Robert Koldewey on excavations in Mesopotamia (Surghul and al Hiba). In 1887 Moritz got a position at the newly established seminar for oriental languages . Here he worked for ten years as acting secretary, librarian and teacher of Arabic.

From 1896 to 1911 Moritz headed the library of the Khedive in Cairo . From there he made frequent research trips to the Sinai and the Hejaz ( Arabia ). In 1911 he returned to Berlin, where he was appointed head of the library of the Seminary for Oriental Languages ​​and a privy councilor. A few years later he received the title of professor. In 1924 he retired.

As an orientalist Moritz dealt with the topography as well as the literacy and linguistics of the Orient, especially Egypt, Arabia and the Sinai peninsula , describing and including the current situation. Of his writings, which he wrote in German, English and Latin, his monographs in particular had lasting success. They are considered standard works in their subject.
