Bernhard Quante (born December 13, 1812 in Coesfeld , † October 7, 1875 in St. Mauritz near Münster ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman , choir director and music teacher .

Life

Quantes training is largely unknown. He was ordained a priest on March 4, 1835 in Münster . From 1840 to 1851 he was director of the school in Rees / Niederrhein . He then devoted himself to training as a church musician . He received this in Rome and Regensburg . In Regensburg he was trained in particular by Carl Proske and Johann Georg Mettenleiter .

After his return in 1855, Quante was appointed choir director at the cathedral in Münster . There he was able to establish and develop polyphonic singing and Gregorian chant . He also founded the Collegium Gregorianum boarding school , which was also dedicated to the promotion of singing. He was also a key figure in the acquisition of the Santini collection . Despite the support of his work by Bishop Johann Georg Müller , it was not possible to obtain the necessary funds for the boarding school in the long term, which is why it had to be closed again in 1863.

Quante was increasingly weakened after the setbacks and was supported by the deputy choir director Friedrich Schmidt. In 1868 he retired to the Franziskaner Hospital near St. Mauritz. He finally died there.
