Bernhard Vollmer

Bernhard Karl Paul Vollmer (born March 12, 1886 in Braunschweig , † March 1, 1958 in Düsseldorf ) was a German historian and archivist . From 1929 to 1952 he was in charge of the Düsseldorf State Archives .

Life

From 1906 to 1912 Vollmer studied history, art history, German and law in Münster and Munich . During his studies he became a member of the KStV Rheno-Bavaria Munich and the KStV Germania Münster . He obtained his doctorate in Münster in 1912. In 1914 he passed the archivist examination at the Secret State Archives in Berlin and after his military service (1915–1919) moved to the State Archives in Düsseldorf; In 1929 he became the State Archives Director.

Since the 1920s, Vollmer has been organizing the Prussian-Dutch archival exchange and lending between the state archives on the German side. On this occasion he met numerous Dutch archivists with whom he remained in close contact from then on. From 1940 to 1944 he headed the archives office at the Reich Commissioner for the Occupied Dutch Territories , but did not discredit himself.

In 1946 he founded the Association of German Archivists , which he headed until 1952. In 1947 he founded the specialist journal Der Archivar , which he also managed until 1952. From 1950 until his retirement in 1952, he was also a consultant for archives in the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Culture. Vollmer headed the Düsseldorfer Geschichtsverein (1934–1958) and published the Düsseldorfer Jahrbuch .

In 1952 he received the Great Cross of Merit . His daughter Gisela Vollmer also became an archivist.
