Bert Meijer (2001)

Egbert Willem "Bert" Meijer , quoted as EW Meijer, (born April 22, 1955 in Groningen ) is a Dutch chemist ( macromolecular chemistry , supramolecular chemistry , organic chemistry ). He is a professor at the Technical University of Eindhoven (TU / e) .

Meijer studied chemistry at the TU Eindhoven with a degree in 1978 and a doctorate in organic chemistry with Hans Wijnberg in 1982 (on chemiluminescence of 1,2- dioxetanes ). After that he was in the Philips Natuurkundig Laboratory in Eindhoven until 1992 , where he mainly dealt with conductive polymers. He was also head of the New Materials department at Koninklijke DSM from 1989 to 1992 . In 1991 he became professor for organic chemistry at the TU Eindhoven. Since 2002 he has also been a professor in the newly founded Faculty of Biomedical Engineering and since 2004 Distinguished University Professor of Molecular Sciences. Since 2008 he has been director of the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems.

He has also been Adjunct Professor of Macromolecular Chemistry at Radboud University Nijmegen since 1995 and Visiting Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara since 2006 . He has also been visiting professor at the University of Florida at Gainesville , Zheijiang University in China, the University of Leuven, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign .

He deals with supramolecular polymers and dendrimers and their synthesis.

He has been on the DSM Scientific Advisory Board since 2006. He is co-founder of SupraPolix (2003) and SyMO-Chem (2000). In 1993 he received the gold medal of the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society, in 1995 the Arthur K. Doolittle Award of the ACS, in 2000 the silver medal of the Macrogroup of the Royal Society of Chemistry, in 2006 the ACS Award in Polymer Chemistry and in 2001 the highest science award in the Netherlands, the Spinoza Price . In 2010 he received an Advanced Grant from the ERC and the Wheland Medal and in 2014 the Prelog Medal and Lecture from the ETH Zurich. For 2018 he was awarded the Chirality Medal . In 2019 he will give a plenary lecture at the GDCh Science Forum Chemistry ( Functional Supramolecular Materials and Systems ).

Meijer is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (2003), the Dutch Society of Sciences (1997), the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) as well as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2015) and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2019). He has been an External Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society ( Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research ) since 2018 .

Since 2005 he has been the editor of Polymer Science A.

He is married and has two children.
