Bertold Peßler (born December 14, 1923 - † May 16, 2014 ) was a German basketball official and trainer. He is considered the "father of basketball" in Bamberg .

Life

Peßler, who initially played handball, came into contact with the sport of basketball at the Steingaden Sports Academy, where he learned the basics of the game from a Hungarian student. After his studies Peßler worked as a sports teacher in Erlangen , he expanded his basketball skills during a course in Frankfurt am Main  and in 1952 was a member of the staff of the World Student Games in Dortmund . As a sports teacher in Erlangen, he was temporarily sent to Bamberg from 1953 to teach students how to play basketball. In the mid-1950s Peßler switched to teaching at the Bamberg high school and in 1965 at the Dientzenhofer grammar school . As director of studies, he promoted basketball at both schools, and one of his students was Wolfgang Heyder , who first came into contact with basketball at Peßler and later shaped basketball events in Bamberg for years. Long-time second division player and coach Ulf Schabacker also got into basketball through Peßler. Peßler later headed the sports center at the University of Bamberg until 1989 .

In December 1958 he initiated the Klaus Haferkorn memorial tournament, directed and shaped this Bamberg basketball event for more than five decades, and later became the patron of the Bert Peßler tournament at the Clavius Gymnasium, which has been named after him and has been held since 1991 . On the occasion of his death in May 2014, those responsible for Bundesliga club Brose Bamberg made clear the importance of Peßler for basketball in the city in an obituary: "His commitment as a sports teacher laid the foundation for basketball enthusiasm in Bamberg." Bamberg's Mayor Andreas Starke formulated Peßler's 2013 merits as follows: “It is largely thanks to him that Bamberg and the entire region have become a basketball stronghold in Germany. (...) Without him there would be no team that rose to the 1st basketball league as 1. FC Bamberg more than 40 years ago and consisted almost without exception of Bamberg players. Without him there would not be the many young people who have collected many titles at state and federal level as part of the youth work of our clubs. Without him there would be no role model for professional basketball in Bamberg. ”On the occasion of his 90th birthday, Peßler was granted the honor of entering himself in the Golden Sports Book of the city of Bamberg. He received the Bamberg City Medal, which is awarded to people "who have made special contributions to the city of Bamberg". In 2003 Peßler was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit with ribbon.
