Bertha Arndts (born December 9, 1809 in Arnsberg ; † May 10, 1859 in Hütteldorf near Vienna ) was a German writer .

Life

Bertha Arndts married her cousin Carl Ludwig Arndts in 1830 . Both lived in Bonn, where Bertha Arndt became friends with Annette von Droste-Hülshoff , among others . In 1847 she wrote her poem To Frau Professor Arndts , which is known today as I'm lying here on a high rock .

The family moved to Munich in 1839 and became friends with the writer couple Maria and Guido Görres . The revolutionary years spent Bertha Arndt in Frankfurt where Ludwig Carl Arndt as a deputy in the German national assembly sat. In 1855 Carl Ludwig Arndts accepted a call to Vienna, where he worked as a professor and lived with his wife.

Bertha Arndts had suffered from severe nervous disorders from her youth, which is why she lived temporarily in Italy from 1831 to 1835. Her condition did not improve, however, and a stay in the seaside resort of Ostend in 1850 did not improve her health either. During her travels, Bertha Arndts wrote down her experiences, some of which were printed. She died in 1859 near Vienna. The following year Carl Ludwig Arndts married her friend Maria Görres, who was meanwhile also widowed.
