Berthold Rembolt
Berthold Rembolt (* around 1460 ; † 1518 in Paris ; also Rembold (us), Remboldt ) was an important printer in France. He set up the renowned Au Soleil d'Or ( To the Golden Sun ) printing workshop in Paris, which his wife Charlotte Guillard continued to run until 1557 after his death .
Life
Rembolt was possibly born in Oberehnheim in Alsace around 1460 . He studied at artist faculties in Germany and Paris. In 1494 he became a partner of Ulrich Gering († 1510) and joined the oldest printing works in France, which he was able to take over in 1508. In 1502 he married Charlotte Guillard, who worked in his office. The marriage remained childless. The printing business in the Latin Quarter was so good that he built the small Hôtel Au Soleil d'Or on rue Saint-Jacques for the company, family and employees. Berthold Rembolt died in late 1518 and his widow continued the company through a second marriage and widowhood until her death in 1557.
Entrepreneur
About 190 printed works by Rembolt have been published. A Virgil edition is considered to be free of errors because it has been corrected so carefully. Like Gering, Rembolt was also a business friend of the printer Koberger in Nuremberg, who had a work printed by Rembolt in Paris in 1510. On Augustine's sermons there is the remark: "You can buy Rembolt himself at the printer and in the offices of Hans Koberger and Jodocus Badius ."
signet
The Rembolts signet was a shield with its initial letters held up by one or two upright lions. There was also a flame star held by two miners and a monogram disc with Jupiter's sign. The signet of his successors showed the golden sun.
